If investment decisions for new healthcare beds are taken with a view of the budget only, this will have a very negative, that is a cost-intensive effect, in the course of the whole service life of the beds. An essential aspect to be considered with every new purchase are thus add-on and operating costs. Strictly speaking, this is a truism that everybody has already experienced himself. Not every product that seemed to be a bargain after carrying out a basic price comparison was in fact able to make good what it previously promised.
The same holds true for an investment into healthcare beds. So having carried out the usual functionality and safety check in a comparison of fairly equivalent quotations, a number of questions have to be checked, by means of which operating and add-on costs during the bed's service life can be definitely evaluated. Because these costs, depending on the relevant manufacturer and model, turn out to be very different and might quickly exceed the cost price. Add-on costs with healthcare beds are mainly the result of their designs and features. This is because the possibilities provided by a bed through its electrical or manual adjustment have an essential impact on the timewise maintenance effort. The design, in turn, is an important factor for maintenance, object care and, more or less, for the need for repair.

First studies carried out show a cost reduction by more than 50% in comparison with the use of other systems.
A second and significant factor is the interaction of the physical environment and the own well-being - a fact that is often neglected, but which is now becoming more and more the focus of attention - especially within the framework of American studies. Meanwhile, participants of the so-called Pebble Project of the Center of Health Design are reporting, among other things, that the provision of cancer patients with painkillers fell by more than 50% only by moving them to hospital rooms that are newly furnished according to the Health Design idea.
Everybody who takes these factors into consideration, when assessing a quotation, will quickly find out that the by far less add-on costs will also justify a much higher cost price at the final count. In the end, an investment of 1,000 euros shows favourably on the daily rate with 27 euro-cents only, even if the service life of a hospital bed is calculated for ten years only.
So it should be allowed to answer a question with another question: What is expensive? The price is always the equivalent of a service provided. And with Völker healthcare beds, this is far beyond average.
