What many nursing care facilities have noticed for a long time is that individually and homely furnished rooms promote occupant's contentment. They create a better working atmosphere and decrease labour turnover rate, thus in all forming a positive image in public.
Occupants are more and more turning into customers. The deficiency model of "old age" does not at all correspond to the social reality any longer. For all the need of aid and nursing procedures, senior citizens and also those advanced in years, want to keep on living in a self-confident and independent way.
He or she places certain expectations on the nursing home, and the extent to which they are fulfilled or not determine to a considerable degree his or her satisfaction with the service provided. In this respect, there cannot be determined any differences between patients and other customer groups any more.
Carrying out a query on occupants' satisfaction, the nursing staff and type of accommodation are at the top of the rating scale. Additionally asking for any need for change, the issue of accommodation comes in first. If the occupant is to be considered as a customer, and when he or she sees the greatest need for change in accommodation, then the issue of switching to a different equipment is perfectly right.
However, this issue must also be raised for quite different reasons. Because psychologists, nursing care facility planners, interior designers and designers have long since thought about the therapeutic significance of the room and realized the interaction of "Design and Health". Studies have shown that occupants need to have control over their physical environment. If this is not the case, the patient will suffer from various types of stress. Wellness factors and a psychosocially supporting environment can counteract this process. Scientific studies carried out during the last decade show a clear connection between psychologically unsuitable design and bad health symptoms like anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, insomnia as well as an increased need for painkillers.
Or just the other way round. The American Center for Health Design with its Pebble project, in which numerous nursing facilities and institutes participate worldwide, has been documenting for nearly ten years now the success of the idea that design can be utilized to create a healing environment.

The success cannot only be found with well-being factors that correspond to the tasks of nursing homes to provide occupants with a humane and self-determined life. So in nearly all cases up to 50 percent less painkillers and other medicine were administered, with occupants' contentment increasing drastically. And the average turnover of nursing staff fell from 17 percent to less than 5 percent nationwide.
