Pressure Sore Prophylaxis. The
Völker MiS® Micro-stimulation System as a conclusive nursing care concept
for pressure sore prophylaxis. You may believe us that pressure sore prophylaxis since many years has been on top of our requirements specifications. And with it, also the search for innovative solutions with regard to the issue of pressure sores. We have seen the suffering of people to be cared for and the worries of caregivers, we have talked with doctors and operators, and we have done research through our two dozen branch offices in many countries worldwide. And we have finally found a solution. We could go back to a development that, under the advice of Prof. A. Fröhlich, who in the 1970ies designed the meanwhile approved basal stimulation with Thomashilfen, a renowned manufacturer of orthopedically aids, was made ready to go into production and today is recorded as a micro-stimulation aid in the medical aids register to the patented Völker MiS® Micro-stimulation System. With the Völker MiS, a huge number of butterfly springs (1) is distributed over the entire lying surface which are removable and freely adjustable on flexible support profiles (2). The support profiles are connected to the sides of the lying surface by means of suspension units (3). Inside the suspension units, there is a TPE module that both fixes the unit to the aluminum frame (4) and gently dampens excessive compression under heavy loads. Basal stimulation was originally developed to promote early advancement and sensory perception of handicapped children and adolescents. At the beginning of the 1980ies, Andreas Fröhlich and Christel Bienstein translated the concept of basal stimulation into nursing care, achieving remarkable success especially with comatose and apallic people. In cooperation with the Institute for Innovation in Health Care and Related Research (IGAP), the MiS® Micro-stimulation System from Thomashilfen (Design by Lattoflex) was further developed by Völker - especially for Völker healthcare beds and hospital beds and thus also for care homes - now being available with all Völker adjustable beds as standard. Analysts estimate that one in 3 occupants are affected by pressure sores. This was all the more tragic, because it was an avoidable disease, according to Christel Bienstein, chair of the expert advisory board of the care foundation. But we are not the only ones to have this problem. The NPUAP (National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel, USA) even refers to decubitus ulcers as being a "national tragedy", because on the one hand they cause great pain to the persons concerned and place a considerable burden on the public health system, but were avoidable on the other hand. At the same time in Germany, just as in the US, there are partly high-technology bedding facilities available for prophylaxis and therapy. According to expert opinion, the fact that pressure sore rates cannot be favourably influenced in spite of a wide range of therapeutic systems is on the one hand due to their complicated and often also improper handling. On the other hand, however, too few attention - up to no attention at all - is paid to the primary problem of "insufficient movement of patients", even with high-tech beds. This is where the new lying surface for Völker healthcare beds comes in: The Völker MiS® Micro-stimulation System. It supports caregivers in implementing the concepts of basal stimulation, Bobath and kinaesthetic. The system's feedback to the patient causes somatic and vestibular stimulation, it conveys information about his body state; little movements stimulate the patient to mobilize on his own. That way, physiological circulation of the skin, among other things, is ensured so that pressure sores can be avoided or the basic requirement for pressure sore healing can be created. At the same time, the Völker MiS® Micro-stimulation systems also fulfils the requirements for mobility, the promotion of sensory perception and fore reducing pain. As a result, Völker MiS® Micro-stimulation System is a nursing care aid that supports and complements basal stimulating care in a sensible way. In all, it provides a conclusive nursing care concept for effective pressure sore prevention. |
